A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national works. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant questions over safety standards.
