There are "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has announced.

Recently Trump said he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to examine the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was planned for this week - but the administration clarified the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The administration did not share additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

The US president had discussed a Budapest summit during a call with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with those familiar suggesting the president had pressured him to relinquish significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Moscow.

Yet, on this week Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he said.

Russia has frequently resisted against pausing the existing front lines.

Moscow was only interested in "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov said on this week, implying that freezing the front line would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the conflict required resolution, the Russian diplomat stated, using Moscow's terminology for a set of comprehensive conditions that involve the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its Western allies.

Zelensky stated talks regarding the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.

He additionally stated the only topic that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unplanned conversation with the US leader last Thursday occurred before reports that the United States was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could potentially strike inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The talk about the missiles had proven to be a "significant input" in diplomacy", he remarked.
