Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
