International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Militant Group in Recovery for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

A Red Cross official confirmed that its personnel joined Hamas officials into areas of Gaza still under Israeli military authority to facilitate the search for the remains of Israeli hostages.

Truce Terms and Captive Bodies Handover

Under the truce negotiated by the United States, which took effect on 10 October, Hamas is required to return the remains of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. In exchange, the Israeli government has agreed to transfer the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

The organization has so far returned the bodies of 15 of those held captive but zero in the past five days, as some of those remains are thought to be in locations beyond the yellow line marking Gaza’s ceasefire.

Red Cross Involvement as Impartial Facilitator

“At the request of the parties, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) accompanied a party to the conflict as the party searched for the bodies of the deceased beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow boundary’,” stated a representative for the organization.

She added: “Those involved to the hostilities established the procedures of the mission and entrusted the ICRC to serve as a impartial mediator. The ICRC was had no part in those negotiations.”

She further clarified: “Our team was not involved in the search for the bodies nor does it take part in the physical recovery of remains.”

American Demand and Regional Search Efforts

As the two-day window neared, the group, accompanied by the Red Cross, teamed up with teams from Egypt, who were granted permission by Israel to search for bodies beyond the line indicating the withdrawal of troops inside Gaza. An official representative said the Egyptian team would use heavy machinery and vehicles in the search.

Authoritative Verification and Media Coverage

The news was supported by an unnamed Israeli official, who told Hebrew-language media that members of the group had been allowed to enter areas of Gaza under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to search for the bodies of captives, together with Egypt’s and ICRC teams.

“For this purpose, representatives were allowed to pass the yellow line,” the official was quoted as saying.

Footage released by a regional network appeared to show members of a specialized group – part of the organization’s military wing tasked with holding hostages – escorting a humanitarian transport in a coastal area close to Rafah, which is beyond Israeli military control.

Challenges in Finding Hostage Bodies

Efforts to locate for the bodies of individuals taken captive has turned into one of the most delicate issues in the truce agreed between the two sides. However, the effort to locate the bodies has been challenging from the beginning, given the presence of an approximate enormous amount of debris across the strip, where, as per health officials, at least 10,000 Palestinians are recorded as unaccounted for, buried under the rubble.

Diverging Statements on Remains Location

The group has claimed it does not know the exact locations of all the remains, saying it has lost contact with several of its teams that had been detaining the captives and were reportedly eliminated during Israeli bombardments.

However, an official representative claimed that the organization knew the locations of the bodies. “If Hamas exerted greater effort, they would be able to retrieve the remains of our captives,” the official said.

US Stance and Disarmament Discussions

While the US president has conceded that some of the bodies are hard to reach, he said that “the rest they can hand over now and, for some reason, they are not.”

“It may have to do with the disarming of the group,” he added.

Washington has said it has obtained guarantees from the organization that the faction will disarm, though no specific schedule has been set. They remains hesitant to give up its weapons without solid assurances about the fate of its members.
