Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He contested the legal system and the law triumphed.

Two months subsequent to being handed a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” Brazil’s democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now appears destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Jailing

The found-guilty coup-monger – who has been subject to residential detention in his estate while a set of legal procedures and appeals unfold – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the coming days, amidst increasing rumors that he will be moved to a well-known top-security penitentiary.

Previous Remarks on Prisoners

Throughout Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the conservative ex- military man displayed scant mercy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“Why should we provide those lowlifes a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be fucked, period. That's my opinion.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to finish behind bars, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Prison Destination Discussion

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked supporters, a group of four this week toured the facility in an seeming bid to dissuade the high court from transferring him there.

Senator Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was part of that quartet, claimed he expected the 70-year-old figure to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and feared his destination could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe gut ailments – the result of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 election race – implied it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His health is extremely serious. He won’t be able to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It could be terrible,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about packed cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells containing 40 detainees: “That is practically one meter squared per prisoner.

“We conversed to the prisoners and they complain, naturally, of the terrible cuisine,” remarked the senator.

Allies Speak Out

Lucas is not the only voice expressing views prior to the former president’s expected detention.

Writing in a leading daily, another ally, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the largest political injustice in its history”.

“It is an wrong that eats away the souls of countless people in Brazil,” the former minister said.

Divided General Response

That may be true due to the considerable support Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. However his predicted jailing has also gladdened the spirits of millions other people who feel he should be imprisoned for plotting to stop his successor from becoming president – and also conspiring to have him murdered.

Reimont Otoni, a congressman for the incumbent leader's Workers’ party, stated: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a hole. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. No one wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to receive dignified handling – but respectful treatment behind bars. He cannot continue being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long applauding the harsh conditions of prisoners, had abruptly realized to their entitlements. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly argued that civil liberties are not for offenders – opted to tour a penitentiary to find out what circumstances are actually like,” he said.

“He is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, demeaning handling”.

Likely Jail Facilities

Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which presently contains about fourteen thousand prisoners, his expected assigned facility appears to be a close prison for police officers and other “unique” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

The accommodations are considerably more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although still a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the stunning official residence, about 12 miles away.

Based on reports, the cell Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – roughly the size of a couple of car spots – and contains a 130 square foot bathroom with a shower and a 130 square foot veranda. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and also a minibar in his cell as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” sources suggested.

Political Responses

Senator Lucas condemned the rumoured idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who oversaw Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will determine his outcome in the {
