The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which included plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
