Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police issued surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
