Lando Norris Wins First Formula One Drivers' Crown in Abu Dhabi In Spite Of Verstappen's Race Win.

Through an exhibition of gutsy racing, Lando Norris has won his maiden Formula One world championship by securing third place at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. That finish was enough for the 26-year-old driver, even though his rival Max Verstappen won the race and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri came home in second.

He delivered exactly what was necessary in an enormously intense contest at the Yas Marina Circuit, including a series of audacious passing maneuvers, with impeccable work from both the driver and his McLaren squad.

A Historic Achievement for Britain and The Team

By winning his maiden world championship, Norris becomes the 11th British driver to achieve this. It also brings to an end McLaren's title wait, which dated back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton last won it. Additionally, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the drivers’ and constructors’ double back in 1998.

This marks a remarkable turnaround for the Woking-based outfit, from a nadir in the middle of the last decade when they twice finished ninth in the standings. The revival has been led by boss Zak Brown and, most recently, by Andrea Stella, who has built an well-drilled team with a very fast car.

A Tale of Two McLaren

Regarding his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had led the championship for a large part of the campaign, there was obvious frustration at faltering in the later races. Several of difficult weekends and mistakes, including crashing out in Baku, were expensive. However, he finishes the season having shown he is too world champion material. Being so competitive in only his third year in F1, with multiple victories, remains a huge achievement.

Verstappen too had been exceptional to force the fight down to the last race. He did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the win, but after fighting back from a 104-point deficit in August, he fell just short of having the points to catch Norris, ending up just two points short.

Sealing the Deal with Clinical Execution

Norris closed out his success with clinical precision to take the crown that had been within reach but remained just out of grasp as McLaren struggled at the previous two races. These included a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an egregious tactical decision in Qatar.

This represents no little accomplishment for the driver in his seventh year in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the squad even during some difficult periods, believing they would return to the top. That faith was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.

Norris performed a hugely impressive job to stick at his goal, keeping his composure and confidence even when under the cosh. Having lost the championship lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he nonetheless worked at getting the most from the car's potential.

The Title-Deciding Grand Prix

In the race, Verstappen kept his lead through turn one, but the main contenders avoided contact. Piastri, starting on the hard tyre, was aggressive and made a brilliant move to go round the outside of Norris to claim second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were allowed to fight, but put Norris under pressure from the Charles Leclerc. Early pit stops saw Norris come out into midfield traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and showed no signs of nerves in his driving.

During the race, he made an absolutely bravura move to dive past two cars in one swoop, climbing to fourth and catching Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull instructed their driver to delay Norris, which resulted in a breathtaking overtaking attempt where Norris went up the inside, almost completely off the track.

This moment was investigated by the race officials, with several nerve-wracking laps elapsing before a time penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris settled the matter. This decisive charge without being held up was vital to his title fight.

Diverging Fortunes

While Norris became the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in form between the two was stark. While the new generation fought for the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal ending to a dismal season with Ferrari.

His first season with the Scuderia had been met by enthusiasm but produced what was comfortably his worst season ever, finishing sixth in the championship and failing to secure a podium. He has appeared jaded in the closing races and will aim to reset over the winter.
