Meteorologists are reporting a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Continue Amid Alerts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the weather service.

Celebrations Under Clear but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks displays, with no rain and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be cold, meaning extra layers vital, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Travelers should to plan for delays for trips on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on the transport network.

The Mercury Forecast to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Alerts Activated

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this indicated the weather was likely to trigger major effects across medical and care provision. This involves a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.

The guidance for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is utterly essential.
