Rampant Hearts Overpower Disappointing Celtic to Extend Eight Pts Ahead
At a glance
- Kyziridis & Shankland secure Hearts win and propel them eight points clear at the top
- Callum McGregor equalized the early own goal by Dane Murray
- Hosts extend 13 league matches unbeaten for the first occasion in over two decades
The dominant Edinburgh side powered eight points clear of Celtic at the summit of the Scottish Premiership to bolster their early-season title credentials and deepen the malaise around Brendan Rodgers' side.
A superb goal from Kyziridis and a spot-kick from Shankland gave Derek McInnes' side a two-goal advantage that the reigning champions could not recover from.
Dane Murray - among three youth players in the Celtic XI - scored an own goal early on to put the home side ahead at a energetic Tynecastle, and it was the youngster's infringement that led to the penalty.
Callum McGregor's classy first goal of the season had quickly cancelled out the first goal, and the Swedish attacker almost put Rodgers' team in front, opting for finesse over power and allowing the Hearts keeper to make a crucial stop.
But the unstoppable Hearts side regained dominance to consign Celtic to successive league defeats for the initial occasion since 2023.
It also gives the Hearts a commanding advantage at the summit.
The previous occasion they were this far ahead was in the 2005-2006 season under George Burley, when they ended as runners-up - one of just four occasions that a team has not secured the title after building such an advantage in the past 27 years.
McInnes, whose former team were second to Celtic on multiple times, has been at pains to downplay championship discussions, as Hearts seek their first top-flight crown since 1960.
The Celtic boss has experienced this previously at the club - both perfect and shaky beginnings to a season. He's never ended as runner-up.
But on Sunday's evidence, this Hearts team showed they need to be taken seriously.
Match Analysis: The hosts Capitalize of Depleted The Visitors
The Edinburgh side started with the confidence of a side undefeated in the league this season - the popular attacker poked a cross in for the striker to fire off target.
Celtic didn't aid their cause with some unusual sloppiness in possession and they faltered under their initial test.
A headed effort from Braga was touched on to a post by the Celtic keeper and the follow-up from Shankland was turned into the net by the hapless defender, in for the injured Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Celtic grew into the contest and started building moves. From one such move, the midfielder released the full-back to square for the captain, who rolled in.
Apart from the Nygren chance, Celtic struggled to create much for striker Kenny or his replacement Shin Yamada amid the absence of injured forwards Kelechi Iheanacho and Daizen Maeda.
The home team regained their intensity and versatility in attacking from across the final third. The Greek forward, a standout performer of the club's relationship with shareholder Tony Bloom's Jamestown Analytics, struck low past the goalkeeper from the just outside the area.
Almost straight away, Murray tripped Braga in the inside right channel and the penalty taker scored. And it could've been an even more handsome win, had substitute Ageu not been stopped by Schmeichel.
The visitors' performance after the break was somewhat summed up in two incidents involving record signing Arne Engles.
The set-piece from Engles delivery was in stark contrast to his midweek exploits in the Europa League win over their Austrian opponents and the Belgium international was then booked for a cynical foul.
Post-Match Comments
Hearts head coach Derek McInnes: "The effort from the squad is evident, the team spirit. That's not always enough to win games week in, week out.
"What we have got, is skillful players. You're witnessing it from a lot of players who have been here previously. Recent additions are keen to demonstrate their quality.
"We're in a positive moment at the minute, but it's just one win. It's important for us to maintain this form. We've got much work ahead, loads to do. Following the initial fixtures is normally an indication of your standing."
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: "The second goal was disappointing from our perspective. We didn't move when the ball went back as a defensive unit so when they play it, they should have players offside but weren't. We have got to do better with the shot.
"There's still so many points to play for. It's only the beginning. It's only nine games in. Obviously, being eight points behind is not what we would want. The comfort is there's so many games to play.
"We now have to focus on the here and now and look to find more consistency and better performance in our play."
Upcoming Fixtures for These Teams?
Celtic are returning to their stadium on midweek against promoted side Falkirk (evening kick-off). At the identical hour in the top division, the Edinburgh outfit are at St Mirren.
