The recently developed medications for gonorrhoea in decades are being viewed as a "major milestone" in the effort against drug-resistant strains of the bacteria, according to health experts.

An International Health Concern

Gonorrhoea infections are on the rise around the world, with figures suggesting in excess of 82 million new cases each year. Zoliflodacin, also known as a brand name, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in mid-December for combating gonorrhoea. This infection can lead to major issues, including infertility. Researchers hope that specific application of this new drug will help slow the spread of drug resistance.

Gepotidacin, originating from the drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline, also received approval in concurrent days. This medication, which is additionally indicated for urinary tract infections, was proven in research to be effective against drug-resistant strains of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

An Innovative Partnership

This new treatment stemmed from a unique collaborative effort for drug creation. The non-profit organisation Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership collaborated with the pharmaceutical company its industry partner to see it through.

According to results released by a prominent scientific publication, zoliflodacin eradicated over nine in ten of genital gonorrhoea infections. The study enrolled nearly 1,000 patients from several countries including Belgium, the Netherlands, South Africa, Thailand and the US.
