The Details Known Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
