The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.

Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
