It has been 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a brief look into the storyline but keeping viewers wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys
The preview reveals the young girl — who received the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a brand new plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it probably is.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
An element the trailer doesn't touch on is what Woody is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and assisting prize toys locate loving owners.
Surely, Pixar will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?
Connections from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some elements are continuing from the prior film. The last thing Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), entrusting her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the badge attached to her shirt.
