The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

After a quarter-century span, no portion of California is experiencing drought conditions. This significant achievement follows difficult years marked by below-average rain that worsened blaze threats and pressured its huge agribusiness.

A Chart Shows An Absence of Dryness

Thursday's report from the national drought tracker showed that all of California is free from any level of drought. This shift resulted from a period of significant storms that replenished major reservoirs like the state's largest lakes far beyond their typical levels.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a climate scientist.

Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays

The path to this point featured powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, leading to significant overflow, blackouts, and fatalities. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Even into late December, regions like Modoc County were considered abnormally dry. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 washed away those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

But, hydrologists note that being out of drought is not the same as being out of the woods. Current readings of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at only about 70% of the average for this date.

This snowpack, which supplies about a third of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for the year ahead. State experts have emphasized that it is too early to determine the outlook for the coming year.

“What we are observing right now is more rain than snow,” explained a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”

Although the monitor indicates no dryness, attention turns to preserving this positive water situation for the coming seasons.
