The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
One of the co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, who established the company with his partner, announced how he will independently develop the controversial flavor within an individual series showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders and Parent Company
The recent development escalates the continuing tension among the internationally recognized dessert company with Unilever, the British packaged goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders maintain how Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur revealed through social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that match those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism and Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
The new product line is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which was first created in 2016 to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts plus Future Intentions
The founder revealed how he will develop other frozen dessert varieties that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, following decades of involvement, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen commented that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence so that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
