The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the series will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
