The Three Lions to Launch the European Championship 2028 Journey at the Etihad Stadium
The English squad will embark on their 2028 European Championship adventure at the Etihad Stadium, provided that they achieve the expected entry for a championship staged throughout the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.
The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an English men’s match since the spring of 2016, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is almost certain to welcome the Three Lions for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The team are scheduled to play their final two group matches at Wembley, but, in the event of winning Group B, their last-16 tie would occur at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean commencing the elimination stage at Everton’s ground.
Tournament Opening and Protest
The event was unveiled at an gathering in central London on the previous evening. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were heckled as they entered the location by around fifty protesters, who urged the Israeli team to be kicked out from international football because of the Gaza crisis.
Banners were held up with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Fixture List
The first match of the European Championship will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on Friday 9 June, a game that will feature the Welsh team if they make it.
The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be staged on July 9, 2028 with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.
It is anticipated that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for Champions League finals from next season, will cater to households and help connect with a wider spectrum of viewers.
Qualifying Teams
The Irish team are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and the Scottish team would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will take part in the qualification process; two guaranteed slots will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
Stadiums and Knockout Stage
The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight staged at every host’s main arena.
The qualification draw will be held in Belfast, which was removed as a venue city last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.
