Roughly 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Officers report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state initial examinations show the substance was likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were working "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the community for tips.
A high-ranking official commented the incident left him speechless and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, mentioning the death of nine victims by a assailant targeting individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
